THIS WEEK IN...

Tech:

What does a real economist think of cryptocurrencies?

In an effort to understand what economists think of this burgeoning industry, Professor Tyler Cowen discusses the history of crypto as it deals with monetary policy and answers a simple question: What would the greatest economists of the past have thought of the current crypto mania?

The US's biggest-cryptocurrency theft case

A US married couple arrested for allegedly conspiring to launder $4.5bn in bitcoin are accused in the US's biggest-ever cryptocurrency theft case. Seizing a record-shattering $3.6bn in bitcoin in a saga that has captivated the internet.

Art:

‘Momentalism’ by Salventius

Niels Kiene, better known as Salventius, is a Dutch artist who specialises in a style of one line portraits. He calls it ‘Momentalism’ since his works uses no guidelines, no quick sketches - just a direct and incredibly quick single line, from start to finish. Moving away from the usual medium of pen and paint, His recent works bring his drawings to life through VR sculpting.

Prophetic Kingdom

Photographer Martin Buday’s debut book explores the world taken for granted - everyday objects and vacant sites - void of people. Giving a nod to a postlapsarian world in which famine plagues the earth after years of bountiful plenty. 'Prophetic Kingdom’ explores the idea of prophecy and overlooked phenomena within our everyday world - juxtaposing the divine next to the seemingly mundane.

Culture:

What the Nordics can teach us about fun

The Scandi philosophy of play - free rather than structured, and plenty of it outdoors. This ideology started when architect Carl Theodor Sørensen came up with the notion of skrammellegepladser meaning "junk playgrounds" and has led to some inspiring settings. It's all mud and dirt. The idea is to give urban lifestyle similar play opportunities to those in the countryside, including all ages.

Why the fashion resale market is here to stay

The rise of sustainable fashion - The clothing industry is changing for the better, embracing the demand for second-hand. In 2022, every clothing brand will have to offer a 360° resale option to their clients, meaning offering a take-back scheme as well as a pre-loved section on their websites and in-store. The reason: they are now dealing with a new type of customer with new sets of demands.

Bank of America invests $20m in “Banked”, making it the UKs latest fintech unicorn

Bank of America Corp. has led a $20 million funding round into U.K. startup Banked Ltd., a tie up that will give customers of e-commerce companies in the U.K. the option to make card-free purchases. The solution will enable users to pay online directly via their bank accounts and avoid card processing fees.

IRS drops facial recognition verification after privacy concerns

The IRS said Monday it won't use facial recognition to verify the identities of users of its site. The announcement follows the agency saying in November it would make use of ID.me's facial recognition services to verify identities on the IRS website by new users submitting a photo of themselves. This raised concerns over privacy in giving a third-party company access to personal information.
